Meet Nancy 74 years young!

“Two years ago I stopped in to CrossFit Maricopa. I was 72 years old and had chronic back & hip pain. Wondering if CrossFit would benefit me, Scott said “CrossFit is for everyone”.

When I started, my joints and muscles were so stiff and tight that it was very difficult to perform the simplest of movements.

In the semi-private training group since day one where all my workouts are tailored just for me!

The Weekly: January 26th

Motivation is what got you to sign up at CrossFit Maricopa in the 1st place but it’s HABIT that will keep you going for the long run. How do you create an exercise habit? Here are a few tips/tricks. 1) Set a time to exercise. Commit to a specific class time daily. Choosing the morning one day and the evening the next will make it difficult to form a habit. PM Kelly if you’d like a recurring schedule set up in Zen Planner (ie M-F at 6AM). 2) Start Small. If you haven’t been getting in at all, don’t jump into 5x per Week of CF. Instead commit to 3 classes per Week and walk/run/bike for 20 minutes on your off days. As you get used to moving every day, then you can add in more CF days. 3) Have your workout clothes ready. If you’re committing to 6AM, then lay out your workout gear the night before. If you’re committing to working out after work, put your gym bag in the car. 4) Don’t Skip a Day. Give yourself a 30 Day Challenge to exercise daily & don’t skip a day. If you’ve committed to CF on M/W/F at 6AM and 20 minutes of walking on your off days, don’t skip a day during the 30 days. PM Kelly if you want accountability for your 30 day exercise challenge or commit to a challenge with a friend at CFM. If you’re struggling to get in & get motivated, send Kelly a message and we can create a plan to hold you accountable.

The Weekly: January 12th

If you’ve been struggling to get into the gym because you just can’t seem to find time, you may need to pause and see what you’re so busy doing. Take a piece a paper and write down all the things that you do in a day. Is there anything you can spend less time doing or erase altogether? For instance do you spend 2 hours a day on social media or watching TV? I guarantee that if you try this exercise, you’ll find that you do have 3-5 hours per Week to make your health a priority! If you try this exercise, I’d love to hear how it went for you. 🙂

This Week is Personal Record (PR) Week at CrossFit Maricopa! We’ve trained our lifts for the last 6 months and now it’s time to test how that training has paid off! If you’re new to CFM or haven’t been in consistently, we still want you to show up during PR Week! For new members, you’ll be able to set a baseline on your lifts. This is fun because you’ll be able to watch your gains as you continue with us. If you’re not ready for a PR (I’m in that camp), then give yourself grace and get in for a good workout!

A strong indicator of Health that you may not know of…

WAIST Size is a very strong indicator of overall health.

Why? Because belly fat is a metabolically hyperactive fat, which means it releases health-harming chemicals into the blood stream that increase the risk of many health problems.

A large waist can:

  • raise highs like high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high blood fats
  • increase the risk of diabetes, heart attack & stroke
  • increase the risk of Alzheimer’s
  • lead to depression & mood disorders
  • increase the risk of “-itis” illnesses like colitis, arthritis, bronchitis

So what should your waist size be? As a general rule:

Women’s waist circumference should be less than their hip circumference and less than 35 inches.

Men’s waist circumference should be no greater than their hip circumference and no more than 40 inches.
